Background

Nowadays the development of economy towards globalization in the Asia-Pacific is characterized by the rapid development in information technology and the acceleration of knowledge flow. On one hand, it has an implication on the importance of human capital development based on knowledge (knowledge-based human development) to support activities in organization as competition requires the mastery of information-based technology and knowledge management to be applied in the organization's activities in order to gain benefits from them. On the other hand, globalization has changed the perspective of business community in the world into the perspective of knowledge society and has an impact on the development of knowledge-based competition marked by the free and open flow of human exchanges which are competent and experienced in the Asia-Pacific. To respond to the changes and the global trend, it is necessary to manage knowledge in the organization so that the organizational effectiveness and performance can be optimized.

The understanding of Knowledge Management (KM) role in the sustainable business context in that KM is the new approach for strategic management solutions and has not had a lot of references. Some interesting questions arise out of this situation every time when KM is introduced or discussed among business communities as well as other communites in Indonesia. We know that knowledge does exist in all organization types, be it private, non-profit, government, or other form. KM approach has been showing as a scientific approach. This has been seen in many of activities, including in processes in business organization. It has becomes obvious that there are no business activities that do not require any KM.

In this regards, knowledge management in any organization cannot be ignored; it even becomes a necessity. And for this reason, a meeting of mind of KM thinkers and practitioners in Asia-Pacific region is felt necessary. KM ASIA-PACIFIC Summit is prepared for this; that hopefully becomes a solution for KM dissemination nationally. The Summit is expected to help boost the implementation of a systematic and structured KM in many organizations in this country. Eventually, they can consistently and optimally develop and utilize knowledge for the betterment of their respective organizations, which expectedly has a positive impact on the nation's progress.

Current Issues

In the era of competition, companies can survive if they have capability in improving the sustainable innovation. The modern organizations are demanded to possess the capability to create knowledge-based innovation. Therefore, the understanding of Knowledge Management and Learning Organization roles is essential in creating sustainable knowledge-based innovation.

In Indonesia, many companies or organization have not been able yet to create knowledge-based innovation, eventually they are less competitive. In the era of ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), many factors need to be reorganized to generate organizations which have capability to create knowledge-based innovation, so that they are able to collaborate in the context of multicultural issues with regional and global companies/organizations.
